Quick Vent

Ok, so most Brewer fans realize that keeping Prince in Milwaukee longterm is a highly unlikely. However, I refuse to believe that it is as unlikely as some people think.

Regardless of any of this, did anyone see Garry Howard's column from today's Journal?

For those of you that have not seen it - http://www.jsonline.com/sports/brewers/84071437.html

I started reading the column and about three lines in I thought, "What the hell am I reading?" This man is seriously THE Sports Editor at the Journal????

Can anybody really make an argument that this is a well-written piece? Garry Howard writes about one column a month, and it is usually the worst column in the newspaper for that month, sports or otherwise.

It just continues to boggle my mind that he is still in this position.

On a positive note, baseball season is approaching, and I (the eternal optimist when it comes to sports) believe that the crew has improved since last year. I will save any real sports discussion for a blog that isn't about Garry Howard.

  1. Gary needs to realize the Brewers aren't a big market, free-spending team like his beloved Yankees. For him to suggest Milwaukee should put over a third of their entire payroll into one player lacks intelligence. Particularly a player who struggles physically and whose skills will decline with age. I agree the Brewers have improved since last year, if only because the pitching can only go up from the dead last ranking it achieved last season.

Until next time, peace...(Gary H trademark)

  2. Clearly, the sports analysis side of his column needs a lot of work.

Btw, am I the only one excited for the upcoming Mitch Huffman blog?

  3. Jon, clearly you do not watch "Preps Plus" on Time Warner Sports channel 32. Gary is clearly the prominent voice for all things MIlwaukee sports. WIth that said, I agree with everything you said. I love that the Journal decided to actually start talking Brewers and not re-writing Packers post-season wrap-ups. The Brewers are going to be better than expected and I can see them winning 87-92 games. I foresee three wildcards which could prohibit or enforce my prediction: Can Hart return to his play of two years ago? Can Wolfe provide reliable support to the front end of the rotation (I believe he will)? and Can Gomez hit around .275 and play well enough in the field for us to forget we have a 96 year old back up outfielder? Rickie Weeks is my boy, Jon, keep up the good work. Goodnight, Canada

  4. For the past 3 years I have been super pumped for the Brewers season to start. This is the first year, I don't that that feel'n. I don't think the brewers staff is strong enough. Wolfe is a nice pick up, but he is not worth the money we are paying him. He will throw a lot of innings like my man Bush, but he isn't a stud. Yoyo has his moments, but can we rely on him yet? I don't think so. Can Braun and Fielder put another season like that together? I think they can. The supporting cast just needs to be more consistent. I still see us a 500 ball club.

Couple good tailgates and ill be good. Who is setting up the first one?

I hope Ryan is right w/ Rickie. 1 full year out of him would be huge. Go Brewers. I want my mo jo back.

  5. I think the key, as Jon astutely pointed out to me a couple months ago, is Manny Parra. The Crew now has 3 lefties in the rotation. Assuming the overpaid Wolf, and the underpaid Davis, do what they normally do, it all comes down to Parra. If that guy doesn't shit the bed you have to like their chances most nights.

I agree with Mitch in that the past three years have been particularly enticing.

So far, we're one for three in terms of realizing that excitement.

I'd argue the best first tailgate would be sometime in June when the weather gets decent. Cubs are in town for a 3 game stint might that entice the masses?

  6. Andy, I did point out that Parra is the key to a successful season for the crew...however, that is a big worry for me. He has proven to be somewhat of a mental midget. I am hoping that the new pitching coach can get Manny's confidence up. It might work wonders for him. Who knows though?

Btw, did anyone hear that Davis wants his old number back, but it is currently taken by YoGa? How pissed am I going to be if they screw my latest jersey purchase by giving YoGa a new number? That would send me over the edge.
